Langston's Lady Blue Devils Win Tip-off Tourny

Back-to-back pre-season tournament championships for Girls

LCMS Girls Basketball TeamThe Langston Chapel Middle School Lady Blue Devils Basketball Team won the district’s pre-season Tip-off Tournament championship on Nov. 18. They clinched the title for the second year in a row after defeating the Southeast Bulloch Middle School Lady Yellow Jackets 27-14 in the first round and then taking down cross-town rivals, the William James Middle School Lady Knights.

Throughout the tournament the Lady Blue Devils were led both offensively and defensively by #15 Sarah Ellis. “She played a phenomenal game racking up double digits in steals with 17 points,” said Head Coach Travis Reddick. Additional basket backup came from #1 Reya Johnson, # 3 Armani Cooke, #2 Autumn Grace, #11 Demia Hartwell, and #25 Kristalyn Lanier.

In the championship match the Lady Blue Devils came out and took a commanding lead that stunned the Lady Knights.  The Lady Knights fought back and took back the lead into the half.

The start of the second half was intense, but the Lady Blue Devils held the Lady Knights to one point in the third quarter and entered the fourth quarter of the game with a multiple basket lead. A last minute shot by Johnson sealed the win and the championship for the Blue Devils.

“Our full-court, man-to-man defense forced the Lady Knights to turnover possession at key moments in the game,” said Coach Reddick, who is now in his third season as head coach for the Lady Blue Devils. “I am extremely excited about leading the team this year. We have been working hard to ascend to new heights for this upcoming basketball season, and we expect to play in the region championship.”

In his previous two seasons, Reddick led the Lady Blue Devils to an overall 18-8 record. A graduate of Georgia Southern University, he worked with the Eagles’ Women’s Basketball program under Coach Rusty Cram from 2002-2005 and the Men’s Basketball Camps from 2003-2005. He has been a teacher and coach for basketball, track and football at LCMS for eight years.
